Company History

Formed by ex Ferranti engineers in 1992, Thistle Precision has a proud heritage in Optical, Magnetic and Contact Encoders together with Resolvers, Potentiometers and Motors.

The company is based just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland in a building where it houses engineering design capability and production facilities.

Acquired by BEI Precision, a US defence contractor, in 2018 and subsequently by Arcline private equity in 2021, the company was renamed Quantic Thistle as part of the Quantic Electronics group, and later rebranded Thistle Precision to align with overall strategy.

Thistle Precision Sensors products are deployed across five continents in applications that measure linear and rotary motion, distance traveled, heading, and other critical angular parameters. Our solutions are engineered for environments where accuracy, reliability, and mechanical robustness are essential. Through continuous innovation and application-driven design, Thistle has earned a leadership position in delivering mission-critical sensing technologies.

To meet evolving customer demands across aerospace, defense, and industrial markets, we have expanded our capabilities to include wound components such as high-performance motors, resolvers, and potentiometers. This broader portfolio enables us to provide integrated motion and position feedback solutions that address complex system requirements while maintaining the precision and durability our customers depend on.
